Two Pedestrian Accidents Occur in Kaysville & Kearns
In Kaysville, near Davis High School at 8:45 p.m., a 17-year-old named Cruz Rushton was hit by a car. Cruz, who is the junior class vice president and a member of the baseball team, sustained critical injuries but has since stabilized. The accident occurred when he ran across the street and was unseen by a car that had initially stopped for others but was in motion again. Later, around 11:06 p.m. in Kearns, a woman was discovered in distress following an accident near 5400 S. China Clay Drive. Fortunately, she is now in good health. Dim lighting in the area is believed to have been a contributing factor, with the involved driver currently cooperating in investigations. To highlight the gravity of such incidents, Utah has experienced the loss of 26 pedestrians in 2023 alone, with a significant 20% of them being children under the age of 12. These tragedies emphasize the paramount importance of road safety and the need for constant vigilance.
Deer in Utah Before the Big Hunt
Utah's deer population has been declining, with numbers in 2022 estimated at 335,000, which is 70,000 less than the state's target. This decline, primarily due to drought from 2020-2022, resulted in a loss of about 80,000 deer. Despite a wet 2022, heavy snowfalls in the northern regions were challenging for the deer. Efforts to combat the decline include emergency feeding stations which have aided approximately 5,800 deer, and a reduction in hunting permits, with 65,000 issued this year. Initiatives are also in place to improve habitats and manage predators. A mule deer management plan update is being discussed, with suggestions from private landowners. Hunters should note regional variations, with southern Utah potentially offering better hunting prospects due to milder winter conditions. The hunting season lasts until Oct. 29th. Ensure you're aware of all regulations and stay safe!

Welcoming Haven for Homeless Students in Davis County
An old office building behind Layton High School in Layton will transform into a sanctuary for homeless students by fall 2024. This initiative was prompted by data revealing over 12,400 Davis School District students faced economic hardships in 2022-2023, with 1,303 being homeless. The Davis Education Foundation is expanding on its 2021 teen drop-in center initiative, which supported over 2,100 students. While these centers provided essential services, they lacked accommodation. Community members Jill and Rod Bergman are assisting with land acquisition, and nonprofit Switchpoint will manage the facility. This community-driven approach has already seen graduation rates rise from 62% to 89% since the centers' inception, showcasing the project's profound impact.

🏀The Thrill of the Game: BYU Enters the Big 12 Era
The BYU men's basketball team has been ranked 13th in the Big 12 preseason coaches poll, and their coach, Mark Pope, humorously linked this to Taylor Swift's affection for the number 13. There's considerable anticipation for BYU's showing in the Big 12, given their recent solid displays and the team's palpable enthusiasm. The athletic department experienced an unprecedented ticket demand, fully selling out their season tickets before even offering them to the wider public. The Big 12 stands as a powerhouse conference, with teams like the Jayhawks leading the charge and a notable number in the AP Top 25 rankings. BYU boasts a strong lineup, keeping stalwarts like Fousseyni Traore, Dallin Hall, Spencer Johnson, and Jaxson Robinson. They also welcome back Trevin Knell after his surgery and are introducing talents such as Aly Khalifa, Dawson Baker, and the much-anticipated Marcus Adams Jr. Combining seasoned pros with budding talent, BYU is optimistic about their journey in what many regard as the zenith of college basketball, the Big 12.
