Reviving the Great Salt Lake: The Magic of Concreate and 250 Acres

The Great Salt Lake, known for its unique ecosystem, is showing promising signs of revival. Mike Kolendranios, the dedicated guardian of the Great Salt Lake Shorelands Preserve managed by The Nature Conservancy, has observed an increase in bird species like the American white ibis. In a partnership with the Utah Department of Agriculture and Food, they're transforming old ditches into 3,000 feet of concrete-enclosed pipeline. This method conserves more water, which is then redirected to the lake. With these changes, the lake is becoming a more hospitable environment for migratory birds, reaffirming hope for the ecosystem's restoration.
To Mike, and all those who pour their hearts into preserving our world’s natural wonders - we salute you. Thanks for being a beacon of hope and inspiration.
Bountiful resident Acknowledges Misusing Influence Over Women
A Bountiful resident, Michael Joe Ricks, admitted to trafficking, coercion, and exploiting two women, with charges including heightened exploitation of prostitution, drug possession with intent to distribute, and supporting prostitution. While he faced 15 charges initially, a plea deal dismissed several of them. Ricks controlled these women, often using drugs, and facilitated their commercial sex work, even renting an apartment for one woman. Despite having no formal employment for over a decade, Ricks managed to own a home. His activities came to light after one victim contacted the authorities. The investigation revealed Ricks' connections to at least 26 individuals in commercial sex, half identified as victims. Ricks tried to dissuade a witness against testifying and will face sentencing on January 5, 2024. Another individual, Patrick Kevin Driscoll, is accused of assisting Ricks and will appear in court on October 24.

Skeletons With a Heart: An Inspiring Gesture This Halloween
Hey friends! As we gear up for Halloween, I stumbled upon a heartwarming tale from Bountiful, Utah. While roaming the streets, you might spot 12-foot tall skeletons in front of homes. Though they seem like festive decorations, these giants are raising funds for the St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. The concept began in Holly Springs, North Carolina, thanks to Jeff Robertson, who initially just sought to spruce up his neighborhood. As we revel in Halloween festivities, let’s also celebrate community and the power of unexpected acts of kindness. If this resonates with you, consider supporting St. Jude's or another cause close to your heart. Also, if you have any spare warm clothing or blankets, there's a 'Warm Bodies, Warm Souls' drive happening. Let's embrace the true spirit of the season!

Utah’s Cookie Rivalry Finds Sweet Resolution
Utah's two cookie giants, Crumbl and Dirty Dough, have settled a disagreement dubbed the “Utah cookie wars”. The dispute began when Crumbl felt that Dirty Dough had similar branding and possibly borrowed recipes. Adding intrigue, Bennett Maxwell of Dirty Dough's brother, Bradley, previously worked at Crumbl and allegedly saved 66 of Crumbl's recipes. Now, both companies are nearing a final agreement. Dirty Dough has returned the Crumbl data and will adjust their cookie packaging to avoid confusion. Both companies emphasize that they value their customers and look forward to focusing on baking and future success.
