Beware: Phone Scams Preying on Parents' Fears
As a concerned member of the Davis School District, I believe it's essential to keep our community informed about potential threats that could affect our families. While this particular scam surfaced in the Granite School District, we must be vigilant, as it could easily find its way here. Please take a moment to read and ensure our children's safety remains uncompromised.
In South Salt Lake, the Granite School District warns parents about rising phone scams using children as bait. One scam involves a caller falsely claiming a child has been kidnapped, demanding a ransom. The scammers use specific details like the child's name and school to sound believable. Sadly, one dad fell for this and lost money.
Another scam has callers pretending to be from the school district, saying the child has been severely injured. They even use the school's official number to seem legit.
Where are they getting this info? Mostly from social media. So, a crucial tip: always watch what you share online. Keep details about your children, like their school or teacher's name, private.
If parents in the Granite School District get such a call, they can text the Granite Police Dispatch at 801-664-2929 to confirm their child's safety. It's a quick way to check while possibly collecting more info about the scammer.
Remember, these scams play on our biggest fears. As the district's Ben Horsley says, they target "the emotional vulnerability" parents feel about their kids' safety. Let's stay alert and protect our families.
Centerville Church Well Back in Action with Changes Looming

Centerville's beloved Church Well, a local treasure since 1933, is flowing once more after a summer hiatus. While it may not be the city's biggest well, it's a hotspot for those seeking non-fluoridated water. The well's AC pump went kaput in June, costing nearly $25,000 to fix. But now, with new pumps in place, it's set to run smoothly for 10 to 15 years.
But there's change on the horizon. Public Works Director Mike Carlson suggests limiting well hours due to noise complaints. One idea is mirroring park hours, from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m., or perhaps 6 a.m. to 11 p.m., regulated by timers.
Carlson also floated the idea of a water use fee, achieved through electronic cards. Residents might pay a small issuance fee for a lifetime card, while non-residents would load funds onto theirs. This would ensure maintenance costs are covered.
Councilmembers seem on board. Councilmember Bill Ince believes it's a sensible way to handle costs, and Councilmember George McEwan emphasizes prioritizing Centerville residents. The council's asked Carlson to look into the electronic card system, keeping the well accessible while making necessary changes.
Feeding Hope: The Heartwarming Journey of The Bountiful Food Pantry

With the days growing cooler, we're reminded of the warmth that community brings. The Bountiful Food Pantry has been a beacon of hope and support for Davis County residents since the 1970s. With a mission to relieve hunger and increase self-sufficiency, this incredible organization has provided not only food but a helping hand to countless individuals and families.
Here are some highlights to celebrate:
🍎 In FY22, the pantry distributed food equivalent to 1.7 million meals, touching the lives of many who are living below the poverty line.
🍎 The Bountiful Pantry goes beyond food distribution. With services like Free Medicare Referrals, Free Immigration Consultations, housing and utility assistance, and even Christmas joy through the Sub-for-Santa program, they're making a holistic impact on the lives of those they serve.
🍎 But did you know about the tireless work behind the scenes? With a volunteer army over 200 strong, they collect, sort, and distribute an astounding 2,000,000 pounds of food annually. These generous souls not only help with food but also with office tasks, yard work, cleaning, and more.
How can you help?
🌽 Grow an Extra Row: Gardeners, the pantry welcomes fresh fruit and vegetable donations. Consider cultivating an additional row in your garden just for them!
🍴 Monetary Donations: Every cent counts. You can easily donate online or send a check directly to their address. With an impressively low administration and fundraising rate of just 3.2%, you can be sure your donations directly benefit those in need.
👐 Volunteer: From seniors to youngsters aged 16 and up, everyone's welcome to join the ranks of the pantry's heroes. Whether it's through regular or occasional service, your time can make a huge difference.
🍅 Donations Needed: Stock up your shopping cart with canned goods like vegetables, fruits, meats, chili, and more. They also appreciate contributions of hygiene products, cleaning supplies, and even cat and dog food. A full list can be found on their website.
To the countless volunteers, donors, and supporters of the Bountiful Community Food Pantry, we salute you. Your dedication strengthens the community, offering a warm embrace to those in need.
Let's continue to rally behind this pillar of hope in our community. To learn more, donate, or volunteer, visit their website or contact them at [email protected] or 801-299-8464.

🏀Utah Women's Basketball: The Rise to the Top
In the vibrant streets of Salt Lake City, a wave of excitement was building. Coach Lynne Roberts and her Utah women's basketball team, fresh off a nail-biting game against LSU in the Sweet 16, were all the talk. As the 2023-24 preseason unfurled, whispers grew louder. Utah, with its powerhouse lineup all set to return, had captured the imagination of both coaches and media.
Roberts had a dream, one she shared on The Utah Checkdown podcast. It wasn't just about recognition; it was about etching Utah's name on the national map. The ultimate prize? The elusive final four.
The preseason polls told a gripping tale. Utah was leading, with UCLA chasing closely, and the reigning co-champions, Stanford, comfortably securing the third spot. As the rankings unfolded, Colorado, Washington State, USC, Arizona, and Oregon filled the subsequent slots.
Among the individual stars, Alissa Pili and Gianna Kneepkens shone brightly, earning spots on the all-conference team. There were also murmurs about talents like Cameron Brink and Reagan Beers.
Roberts gazed at the competition, marveling at the overflowing talent in the Pac-12. Every season, the bar was being raised, promising basketball aficionados a season of suspense, flair, and unparalleled drama. The streets of Salt Lake City echoed with a unified chant: Go Utes!
