Chew on this, pups:
not all treats are created equal!
Chews That Do Good – Healthy, Sustainable, and Mission-Driven
Many mass-market chews contain fillers, artificial ingredients, or are tough to digest. That’s where single-ingredient chews shine—they’re exactly what they sound like: one clean ingredient.
✅ Easier to digest
✅ Less likely to trigger allergies
✅ Naturally nutrient-packed
They also support dental health, relieve stress, and keep pups happily occupied during those long fall evenings indoors.
🦴 Benefits of Single-Ingredient Chews
• Reduce stress by releasing endorphins
• Scrape plaque and support gum health
• Deliver protein and minerals naturally
• Offer safer alternatives to rawhide

Exercise for Your Dog: How Much, What Kind, and How to Start
When kids head back to school and schedules shift, many dogs end up with extra energy—and that energy has to go somewhere. The right mix of movement and mental work keeps bodies healthy, lowers stress, and reduces problem behaviors at home. Here’s a practical guide for Bountiful dog families.
How much exercise does my dog need?
Adults: Aim for 45–90 minutes daily, split into two sessions. Mix walking with short bursts of purposeful work (sniffing games, fetch with rules, simple conditioning).
Puppies: Keep it short and varied—gentle walks and play with lots of sniffing and rest. Avoid repetitive, high-impact activities (long runs, endless fetch, stairs).
Seniors: Little and often. Short, frequent strolls plus gentle strength/balance work to maintain mobility.
High-octane breeds/mixes: Add brain work—scent games, problem-solving, and training games count as “exercise” because they tire the brain.
Rule of thumb: If your dog is still wild after a walk, add brain work; if they’re mentally wired but physically restless, add steady movement.
Safety first
Heat & air: If pavement is hot to the touch or air quality is poor, do indoor sniff/brain games instead.
Leash & gear: Use a 6-ft leash (no retractables for group walks), a well-fitted harness, and bring water.
Red flags: Slowing behind you, lagging, excessive panting, limping, or glazed eyes—stop, rest, and shorten next time.

🐾 Back to School for Your Dog Too: Rewarding Skills the Positive Way
As the kids head back to school, it’s a great time to brush up on your dog’s skills too! When teaching new behaviors, rewards are the language your pup understands best. The idea is simple: pair the action you want with something your dog loves. Over time, they connect the behavior with the reward—making them more likely to repeat it.
For example:
If you’re practicing polite leash walking, reward your dog every time they keep the leash loose and walk calmly by your side. This way, they clearly understand what earns the good stuff.
At Preppy Paws, we recommend keeping a mix of reward levels on hand:
Elements Kibble – perfect for everyday practice and healthy enough for frequent use
Rocky Mountain Raw Freeze-Dried Treats – single-ingredient bites that grab attention fast
Smallbatch – wholesome, whole-food rewards with fresh, meaty flavor
Pro Tip:
Use kibble for simple, familiar skills.
Use whole food treats in busier or more distracting settings.
Save single-ingredient treats for big wins or tougher training moments.
Keep pieces small—so your dog stays focused without getting too full.
💡 Bonus: When choosing treats, match them to your dog’s regular diet. For example, if your dog eats Elements Outback (with kangaroo, wild boar, and lamb), try pairing it with a Smallbatch Lamb Booster or kangaroo jerky. This keeps training exciting without overwhelming their system with too many new ingredients.

🐾 Back to School Blues:
Beating Dog Boredom While the Kids Are Away
![]() | ![]() | ![]() |
⭐️ As backpacks get packed and the school bell rings, many dogs are left wondering why their playmates have disappeared. The transition from summer chaos to quiet school days can lead to canine boredom—or even anxiety.
👇 Here’s how to help your dog beat the back-to-school blues:
1. Stick to a Morning Routine
Just like kids need structure, dogs do too. A quick walk or a sniff-and-seek game before the house empties helps release energy and reduce stress. A tired dog is a calm dog.
2. Use Enrichment Feeders
Ditch the food bowl! Mealtimes are a great opportunity for mental stimulation. Puzzle feeders like the West Paw Toppl—especially when stuffed and frozen with your dog’s breakfast and favorite toppers—keep them engaged and focused.
3. Leave Something to Do
Safe chews, lick mats, or frozen pupcicles can help pass the time while your dog is alone. We love Woof Pupcicles, Tall Tails Foraging Mats, and Doggin’ Stix Chews for a rotating boredom-blasting menu.
4. Schedule Midday Fun
If you're out most of the day, consider a drop-in enrichment session at Preppy Paws. We offer private play or mini sessions to keep your pup’s brain and body active.
5. Keep Evenings Engaging
After a quiet day, dogs need some quality time too. Sign up for an AKC class, take a short hike, or try a fun nosework activity to reconnect and give them something to look forward to.

What to Avoid in Your Dog’s Bowl 🐾
Not all dog food is created equal—and what’s on the label matters more than you might think!
When shopping for your pup’s food, steer clear of common fillers like corn, wheat, gluten, and by-products. These ingredients often add bulk without offering real nutritional value—and they can be tough on sensitive tummies, sometimes triggering allergies or digestive upset.
🐕 Instead, look for foods packed with real, whole ingredients and a high percentage of animal-based protein. That’s the kind of nutrition that fuels tail wags, zoomies, and long, healthy lives!
Some of our favorite Preppy Paws-approved picks include:
🥩 Smack – Gently air-dried with whole meats and organic produce
🌿 New Zealand Natural – Freeze-dried raw made from clean, ethically sourced proteins
🍖 NutriSource Elements – Kibble with 84% animal protein and zero fillers
🥕 Smallbatch – Raw food crafted from thoughtfully sourced meats and organic veggies
