After 25 Years, Local Nonprofit Urges Calm in Face of Infant Crying

The National Center on Shaken Baby Syndrome, based in Farmington, Utah, marked its 25th anniversary with a renewed call for prevention and education. The nonprofit emphasized the dangers of reacting in frustration to crying babies, as cases of shaken baby syndrome have increased in Utah. Through initiatives like the Period of PURPLE Crying, the organization provides resources to help caregivers manage stress and reduce abuse. One board member, Emily Bodily, shared how the loss of her son Elijah to shaken baby syndrome motivates her ongoing advocacy.

Open Your Home: Earn $600/Month Hosting an Exchange Student

As the upcoming school year approaches, a call has gone out for local families in South Davis County to open their homes to international high school students. The program, managed through International Cultural Exchange Services (ICES), is currently seeking host families specifically in the Bountiful, Woods Cross, and Viewmont High School boundaries.

The exchange students arrive with a strong focus on academic achievement and a desire to experience American culture firsthand. In return for providing a welcoming home, host families receive a monthly stipend of $600 per student as a token of appreciation. Families may host one or two students, and students are allowed to share a bedroom.

Host families are responsible for offering room and board, while students cover their own personal expenses, including school supplies, clothing, and outings. The primary expectation is that families offer a safe, supportive, and nurturing environment where students can thrive and feel like a true member of the household.

For those who may not be in a position to host, ICES also offers a $100 referral bonus for each successful connection to a new host family.

⛳️ Bountiful and Viewmont Standouts Make Mark in Early Season Golf Tournaments

• Woods Cross senior Kennedee Pearson tied for first at Schneiter’s Bluff with a 2-under 70 and led her team to a second-place finish.

• The Wildcats also placed second at Riverside and Lakeside tournaments earlier in the season.

• Bountiful’s Cambria Ohlson tied for third at Schneiter’s Bluff and won at Lakeside; her team finished fourth at both events.

• Viewmont’s Brinley Carr was the top performer for the Vikings, who placed fifth at Schneiter’s Bluff and sixth at Riverside.

🚨 80 Arrested, 100 Tons of Debris Removed from Salt Lake’s Jordan River Trail

Salt Lake City police have arrested 80 individuals and conducted over 1,000 patrols since February in an effort to reclaim a problematic stretch of the Jordan River Trail. The area, once plagued by crime and illegal camps, has seen major cleanup efforts and increased police presence. Over 100 tons of debris were removed, and city officials report a notable drop in criminal activity. The trail remains closed between 900 South and 1300 South, but reopening plans are in progress as safety improves.

Bountiful High School is celebrating the 20th anniversary of Fools for Jazz, a swing dance event featuring live student and alumni jazz performances, a free dance lesson, themed contests, and food. The event takes place in the school’s old gym, transformed into a 1940s dance hall. Live music runs from 6–9 p.m., with a free dance lesson at 5:30 p.m. Tickets and table reservations are available at dsdgive.net.
