🏡 Bountiful Looks to Make Backyard ADUs Easier to Approve

Bountiful is moving toward changing the way detached accessory dwelling units — think backyard cottages, small secondary homes or apartments over garages — are approved in the city.

The Planning Commission has recommended changing detached ADUs from a conditional use to a permitted use, meaning homeowners who meet the city’s requirements would no longer need to go through the same conditional-use approval process.

The change comes as Utah prepares for a new state law taking effect Oct. 1. Bountiful currently allows both internal and detached ADUs, although detached units are still listed by the city as conditional uses while the proposed changes work through the approval process.

The recommendation still needs City Council action before the change is final.
