Museum Post Sparks Local Nostalgia for Long-Gone Bountiful Service Station

A recent post from the Bountiful Museum & Learning Center has stirred up memories of a long-gone UTOCO service station once run by Pete Stoyanoff at Main Street and 3rd North. The post came from researcher Eli Ames, who is tracing the history of Utah Oil Company’s standardized "twin" gas stations across Utah and Idaho.

Locals responded with vivid recollections of the station's layout—featuring a one-bay garage and hydraulic lift—as well as childhood memories of playing there and stopping for gas on the way to school. Stoyanoff, a seasoned mechanic from Dragerton, Utah, ran the station with help from his children, including twins Jack and Jill.

Thanks to these shared stories, Ames identified three of these unique twin-design stations in Bountiful alone—helping preserve a small but meaningful piece of the city’s mid-century past.

If you have memories, photos, or information to share, you’re invited to join the conversation on the original Facebook post.

How Utah Seniors and Others Can Protect Themselves from Scam Calls

Spam and telemarketing calls have become a major annoyance, especially for seniors who are often targeted. Some individuals report receiving over 50 calls a day, disrupting their daily lives and making it difficult to distinguish between real and scam calls.

Experts advise against answering unknown numbers, as doing so increases the chances of receiving more spam. Robocall systems track and share active numbers that pick up.

Instead, let unfamiliar calls go to voicemail—legitimate callers will usually leave a message. People should also register their phone numbers on the National Do Not Call Registry, which can take up to 45 days to become active. Telemarketers who ignore the list face serious penalties.

Lastly, phone providers often offer spam-blocking tools tailored to different devices and plans, which can help filter out unwanted calls.
