🔥 Fire Reaches 72% Containment, Football + Farmington Tax Hearing

🔥 Rocky Canyon Fire Reaches 72% Containment
There’s encouraging progress on the Rocky Canyon Fire, which lit up the eastern sky and caught plenty of attention around Bountiful last week.
The fire has burned 15,950 acres and is now 72% contained, although crews reported renewed activity on the northwest corner as vegetation dried out following recent rain.
Firefighters prepared contingency lines around the steep, inaccessible Bishop’s Canyon area for a strategic firing operation. Officials warned the operation could create increased smoke visible to nearby communities, even as crews continue making progress around the rest of the fire.

💰 Farmington Property Tax Hearing Set for Tuesday
Farmington residents will have an opportunity Tuesday night to weigh in during the city’s Truth in Taxation public hearing.
The hearing is connected to Farmington City’s proposed tax increase and will be held Tuesday, August 18 at 7 PM. Residents can attend at Farmington City Hall or participate virtually through Zoom.
Virtual participants who want to comment during the hearing will need to use Zoom’s “Raise Hand” feature. The city is also accepting emailed comments.
🏈 Viewmont Starts With a Shutout
That’s one way to start a football season! Viewmont opened 2026 with a 24–0 win over Bonneville Friday night in Bountiful. The Vikings are 1–0 heading into Week 2.
🏈 Woods Cross Wins a One-Point Thriller
Woods Cross also started the season in the win column, holding off Syracuse 27–26 Friday night.
The Wildcats survived the one-point finish at home to open the year 1–0.
🏈 Bountiful and Farmington Meet Under the Friday Night Lights
Two local teams collide this Friday when Bountiful hosts Farmington for Week 2 of the high school football season.
Bountiful enters the matchup after a 27–9 win over Herriman, while Farmington will be looking to bounce back from its opening loss to Roy. The game has been selected for KSL Sports’ Game Night Live Game of the Week.
