Firework Explosion Injures Three at Centerville Freedom Fest

A firework explosion at Centerville’s Freedom Fest on July 5 injured a police officer and two teenage girls. The incident occurred around 9:45 p.m. at Centerville Community Park as crowds gathered for the evening fireworks show.

Police say a mortar-style firework was thrown into a crowd near the concession stands. A nearby officer attempted to extinguish it, but it exploded, burning his leg and causing minor injuries to two teen bystanders.

Several juveniles fled the area but were later detained. Two were arrested after officers reviewed surveillance footage and were booked into youth detention on multiple charges.

Authorities are asking any additional witnesses or victims to contact Centerville Police at 801-292-8441.

Community Invited to Honor WWII Hero at Bountiful Cemetery

Local residents are invited to participate in a meaningful tribute to a fallen World War II pilot whose remains were recently recovered and will finally be laid to rest after more than eight decades.

On Tuesday, July 8, volunteers are needed at the Bountiful Cemetery to help set up and later retrieve flags in preparation for the graveside service of 1st Lieutenant George Wilson. Wilson’s plane was shot down over France during World War II, and his family will now have the opportunity to honor his sacrifice with a formal burial service.

The flag setup begins at 9 a.m., with flag retrieval scheduled for 8 p.m. This day of service offers a unique opportunity for community members of all ages to connect with history and show gratitude for the sacrifices made by the Greatest Generation. Organizers encourage participants to bring younger family members along to help instill a sense of reverence and appreciation for those who gave their lives in defense of freedom.

The event is supported by organizations such as the Major Brent Taylor Foundation and Follow the Flag, both dedicated to honoring veterans and promoting patriotic service.

Quick-Thinking Neighbors, Tractors, and Teamwork Save the Day in Tooele Fire

A July 4th barn fire in Tooele County nearly turned disastrous, but quick action from neighbors helped contain the flames and rescue livestock. The fire broke out at the McCormick family’s home in Stockton while they were away. With local fire crews overwhelmed by multiple emergencies, residents used tractors to cut fire lines and safely evacuated animals. Though heirlooms were lost, no injuries were reported. Authorities are still investigating the cause.
