Fireworks Schedule for New Year Celebrations

As Local residents prepare to ring in both the New Year and Chinese New Year, city officials are reminding the community of the designated times when fireworks are allowed.

To ensure a safe and respectful celebration, fireworks may only be discharged during specific windows:

  • New Year’s Eve (December 31): from 11:00 a.m. until 1:00 a.m. on January 1

  • Chinese New Year’s Eve (February 16): from 11:00 a.m. until 1:00 a.m. on February 17

Outside of these timeframes, the use of fireworks is strictly prohibited. The city encourages everyone to be considerate of neighbors, mindful of pets, and cautious when handling fireworks.

These guidelines aim to support both festive traditions and community safety as residents welcome the new year.

Local Law Enforcement Ramping Up DUI Patrols for New Year’s Weekend

Local police will be increasing DUI patrols through New Year’s Day as part of a statewide effort to crack down on impaired driving. The initiative involves over 40 law enforcement agencies across Utah, including officers in our area.

With funding from the Utah Department of Public Safety, extra patrols will focus on identifying and stopping drivers under the influence of alcohol or drugs. The campaign comes in response to high DUI numbers during past holidays, with more than 160 arrests last New Year’s.

Officials urge residents to plan ahead, use designated drivers or ride-share services, and celebrate responsibly to keep roads safe.

⛷️ Backcountry Skiing Mishap Leaves Man in Critical Condition Near Alta

A backcountry skiing expedition between Utah’s Big and Little Cottonwood Canyons turned dangerous Tuesday afternoon when a skier fell a significant distance near Mount Superior.

The incident occurred around 1 p.m. while the skier, a 59-year-old man, was navigating the terrain with a group. Although the exact cause of the fall is still under investigation, authorities have ruled out an avalanche as a contributing factor.

Emergency crews from the Salt Lake County Sheriff's Search and Rescue team responded to the Little Cottonwood Canyon side of the mountain. A Department of Public Safety (DPS) helicopter was deployed into the backcountry to reach and extract the injured man.

By 2:20 p.m., the skier was airlifted from the slope and transported to a waiting LifeFlight medical helicopter. He was then flown to a hospital in critical condition.

As a result of the rescue operation, a section of State Route 210 between Alta and Snowbird was temporarily closed. The road has since reopened.
