Hawk warnings, sprinkler debate + summer reading ๐
Issue #742 - Pet owners are keeping a closer eye on the skies while Woods Cross residents push for watering schedule changes and North Salt Lake launches a new reading challenge.

Happy Friday, everyone!
Brenda here. Iโm currently out of town enjoying a little getaway with my family, but I wanted to make sure you still got your weekly dose of local updates before the weekend kicks off.
One quick housekeeping note before we dive in: there wonโt be a Real Estate edition hitting your inbox this Saturday while I take a quick pause to focus on family time. Weโll be right back on track next week!
For today, weโve still got you fully covered with everything you need to know for the weekend ahead. Let's get into it!

๐ฆ Urban Hawk Sightings Put Local Pet Owners on High Alert
A neighborhood social media post identifying a Red-Tailed Hawk on a residential fence has sparked wide community discussion and safety warnings for local pet owners.
The conversation intensified after resident Jen Jenson shared a terrifying near-miss, recounting how she had to rescue her pet parrot just seconds before a hawk attacked it in her yard. Other neighbors reported frequent sightings near residential areas and local church trees, prompting warnings for owners of small dogs, cats, chickens, and rabbits.
Wildlife observers note that a dry winter and early summer heat have depleted traditional wilderness prey like field mice. This food scarcity is driving the protected predators out of their natural habitats and into irrigated suburban neighborhoods in search of food. Local residents are urging extra vigilance and supervised outdoor time for small pets this summer. ๐ See Post
๐ฆ Woods Cross Residents Request Shift in Park Sprinkler Schedules
The Issue: Woods Cross residents are asking the city to adjust its park watering schedulesโspecifically near Mills Park. Currently, the sprinklers run during the cool morning and evening hours (around 7:30 to 8:00 AM/PM), making the walking trails and dog areas unusable just when neighbors want to get outside. Some residents also questioned why the parks water so frequently during a drought.
The Cityโs Perspective:
Huge Workload: The Parks Department is currently managing over 60 acres of turf and managing 80 different sprinkler valves that take hours to run sequentially.
Fine-Tuning: Because irrigation water was only turned on a month ago, crews are still actively repairing the systems and balancing water conservation with healthy grass.
The Upshot: The community was grateful for the transparency, and the city promised that residents will see adjustments to the watering schedules and run times over the next few weeks as they fine-tune the system.
๐ North Salt Lake Launches "Three By Three" Summer Reading Challenge
The Scoop: The City of North Salt Lake is promoting its "Three By Three By Land or By Sea" summer reading challenge in celebration of America250.
How it Works: Residents are challenged to read three patriotic books by July 3, 2026.
The Perk: Participants who complete the challenge can enter to win prizes and exclusive America250 swag. Full details and sign-ups are available on the city's official website (nslcity.gov).

โ๏ธ Utah Mom Who Fled to Croatia with 4 Children Extradited, Booked into Davis County Jail
A 35-year-old Utah mother, Elleshia Anne Seymour, has been extradited back to Utah and booked into the Davis County Jail after fleeing to Croatia with her four children on November 30, 2025. Seymour left the country without the fathers' consent following a series of apocalyptic TikTok videos and delusional notes. The children were located safe at a Croatian orphanage in January 2026 after a local woman discovered Seymour did not have custody and alerted authorities. Seymour now faces a charge of custodial interference.
