Utah Lawmakers to Address Classroom Phone Usage and Social Media Impact on Youth
The Utah Legislature's 2024 session is poised to address several critical issues. Key areas of focus include education reforms, with debates expected on banning phones in classrooms and tackling chronic absenteeism. Social media regulation, particularly concerning minors, is also a major agenda, building on last year's efforts to enforce age verification and user accountability.

Extradited Fugitive Nicholas Rossi Booked in Davis County Jail, Facing Multiple Rape Charges
Nicholas Rossi, 36, extradited from Scotland, is now detained in Davis County Jail, Utah. Facing rape charges in both Salt Lake and Utah Counties, Rossi's case is marked by his use of multiple aliases and international evasion. His identity was confirmed through DNA and distinct tattoos after fleeing the U.S. This high-profile case gained further complexity with additional sexual assault charges emerging in 2022. Rossi's booking in Davis County Jail marks a critical juncture in this multifaceted legal proceeding.

From Africa to Utah: Gaia, The World's Deadliest Cat, Arrives at Hogle Zoo
Gaia, a petite but lethal black-footed cat, has become a new inhabitant of Hogle Zoo in Salt Lake City. Notably the deadliest cat globally, she is notably small, weighing only 2.6 pounds. Black-footed cats, native to Africa, are known for their exceptional hunting abilities and elusiveness. Gaia's presence in the zoo provides a rare glimpse into the life of these small but mighty predators, underscoring that despite their allure, they are not suitable as household pets.

Embrace New Experiences: Hogle Zoo's Tips to Beat the Blues
This January, Hogle Zoo is not just a sanctuary for animals but a source of inspiration for us all. The zoo's recent initiative, #BeatTheBluesAtTheZoo, offers a unique perspective on overcoming the winter doldrums.
๐Today's tip? Try something new!
Learning new skills or hobbies can be transformative, boosting confidence and courage while diminishing fear and anxiety. This approach isn't just beneficial for humans; it's also crucial for our animal friends. The zoo engages its animals in 'enrichment' activities, encouraging natural behaviors through innovative methods like puzzle feeders, unique toys, and sensory experiences such as bubbles and new scents. This enrichment is pivotal in maintaining the animals' physical and mental well-being.
Hogle Zoo urges us to take inspiration from the otters and embrace new challenges. Whether it's exploring a new route home, signing up for a painting class (did you know the zoo's paint nights were voted the best of 2023 by City Weekly?), or simply bundling up for a refreshing walk in the zoo, these new experiences can invigorate our lives.
So, let's step out of our comfort zones this month and discover the joy of new experiences, just like our friends at the zoo.

Meanwhile, the Davis Darts, boasting a solid 7-3 record, are showcasing their prowess on the court, led by star players who excel both in scoring and teamwork. As they gear up for the regional showdowns, there's a palpable excitement in the air, with each team eager to add another victorious chapter to their story.

Viewmont Vikings Wrestle Their Way to Impressive Finish at Home Invitational"
The Viewmont Vikings wrestling team is continuing their legacy as one of the top teams in the state, under the leadership of head coach Luke Gibbs. Hosting the Viewmont Invitational, they competed against 21 schools and placed sixth with 117 points. Standout performances included Tate Ripplinger winning the 138-pound class and Spencer Rees taking second in the 144-pound class. Other notable wrestlers like Collin Roberts, Leo Wright, Alex Lindquist, Will Millet, Kaleb Djambov, and Mack Youngberg also made significant contributions, showcasing the depth and talent of the Vikingsโ roster in this challenging tournament.

Elementary Excellence: Foxboro Third Graders Wow Community with Original Opera Performance
Third graders at Foxboro Elementary School, with a grant from the Utah Opera Company, wrote and performed an original opera based on "King Midas and the Golden Touch." They composed over 20 songs with the help of musician Ann Odom and their drama teacher, Pieter Lingen. The process took just over a month, with extra rehearsals before and after school. The successful performance in early December, attended by parents, teachers, and fine arts community members, was highly praised by Lisa Cluff, Executive Director of Art Works for Kids. This event highlights the importance of arts education in developing creativity and collaboration skills in young students.
