Farmington's Mixer League Pickleball: A New Twist on the Classic Game
The Farmington Parks and Recreation Department is gearing up for its unique Mixer League Pickleball event, set to start on February 27, 2024. This engaging six-week program, designed for both residents and non-residents, offers a dynamic twist on the traditional pickleball league. Unlike usual team registrations, participants will sign up individually and enjoy the excitement of playing doubles with a rotating set of partners. This format not only spices up the competition but also provides a wonderful opportunity to connect with fellow pickleball enthusiasts. With each session lasting 90 minutes, players will have ample time to showcase their skills and strategies.
The league, priced at $32 for residents and $42 for non-residents, will unfold at the Farmington Gym located at 294 S 650 W., Court 3. Notably, the league will take a brief hiatus during the first full week of April to accommodate spring break. By the end of the program, participants will have the unique experience of having played with each player twice and against them four times, fostering a sense of community and camaraderie among the players.
Consumer Alert: Prevalent Gift Card Scam Hits Local Smiths
In a concerning development at Smiths Farmington, a customer's alertness has shed light on a worrying trend involving tampered Apple gift cards. Early this morning, an unsuspecting shopper purchased a $10 gift card, only to discover upon attempting to redeem it that two of the activation code numbers had been meticulously scratched off, despite no visible damage to the card's holographic seal.
Prompted by the customer's discovery, the store manager inspected the entire stock of Apple gift cards, finding six additional cards with similarly scratched-off numbers. This alarming incident highlights a sophisticated method by which thieves manipulate gift card packaging to steal the embedded codes without breaking the seal, posing a significant risk to unsuspecting buyers.
The store's investigation suggests that culprits are temporarily removing stacks of cards from the premises to tamper with them, later returning them to the display hooks to avoid immediate detection. In response to the customer's immediate action, Apple Support was contacted, and the missing numbers were retrieved, allowing the gift card to be redeemed successfully before the perpetrators could use it.
Customers are now being advised to thoroughly inspect gift cards for any signs of tampering before purchase, paying close attention to the integrity of the packaging and the visibility of the code. This incident not only underscores the innovative tactics employed by thieves but also the need for heightened vigilance among consumers and retailers alike.

Utah Couple Faces Unexpected Ordeal as Sinkhole Destroys Property
In Sandy, a suburb of Utah, a significant sinkhole emerged in a residential area following a water main break, causing considerable distress to homeowners Alta and Gene Cunliffe. The sinkhole, measuring approximately 25 feet in width and varying from 15 to 25 feet in depth, opened up in the couple's front yard. This incident was attributed to recent freeze-thaw weather conditions which caused an eight-inch water main near the road to split, releasing a substantial volume of water underground. The water's erosive power created a cavern that led to the collapse of the sidewalk, flower boxes, and various yard tools into the abyss. Efforts to repair the damage are ongoing, with city officials indicating that the sewer line was also compromised, leading to further complications for the Cunliffes. The city has committed to repairing all damages caused by the water main break, reassuring the affected residents.

Pride and Precision: Local Schools Compete at State Drill Finals
The State Drill Team Finals at the UCCU Center at Utah Valley University showcased exceptional talent, with teams from across the state, including Bountiful, Davis, Farmington, Layton, Syracuse, Viewmont, and Woods Cross High Schools, competing with spirit and precision. The competition highlighted the achievements of several teams: Hillcrest High School clinched its first title since 2016, marking a significant victory in the 4A category by excelling in dance and showing strong performances in military and show categories. In the 3A division, Canyon View High School continued its dominance by securing a third consecutive state title, impressing with performances inspired by the "Guardians of the Galaxy" soundtrack. The 2A category saw Duchesne High School returning to the top, demonstrating a deep bond and teamwork that brought them their first state title since 2018. These achievements exemplify the dedication and skill of all participating teams, celebrating their hard work and success in this season's competition.
