๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ฆ Honoring Shared Stories at Handcart Days

Bountiful City Mayor Kate Bradshaw welcomed members of Ukraine's Kherson community to the Handcart Days Parade, recognizing the resilience they have shown while learning about city infrastructure as they prepare to rebuild their communities. Bradshaw said the invitation reflected shared values of perseverance, drawing parallels between Ukraine's experience, the spirit of 1776, and Utah's pioneer heritage.

This highlights Bountiful's commitment to building international friendships while celebrating the values of resilience and community that are central to the city's history.

๐ŸŒฎ La Sabrosita Brings Mexican Snacks and Treats to Bountiful

A newly opened local business is giving Bountiful residents another place to satisfy their savory snack cravings!

La Sabrosita Antojitos Bountiful recently opened at 273 W. 500 South, Suite 16, just behind the new Thirst location. The shop is reportedly entering its second week in business, and one local customer is encouraging the community to stop by and help spread the word.

The new spot is already attracting attention, with residents asking about its menu, hours, and food offeringsโ€”and several saying theyโ€™re eager to give it a try.

La Sabrosita also plans to begin serving ice cream once some unexpected freezer and electrical issues are resolved.

๐Ÿ’ฌ COMMUNITY CHATTER

๐ŸŒฑ Are Gravel Yards Making Utah Hotter?

A recent Utah social media post is stirring up conversation about whether replacing lawns with gravel is helping conserve waterโ€”or making our neighborhoods hotter.

The concern has some truth behind it. Grass, trees and other plants cool their surroundings through shade and evapotranspiration. A University of Utah study found that a mixture of grass and dispersed trees was especially effective at cooling areas of the Salt Lake Valley.

But that doesnโ€™t mean Utah homeowners should keep large lawns watered during a drought. Water used by grass does not create a net savings for our reservoirs, even though some excess irrigation can eventually return to groundwater or streams.

The more balanced answer may be waterwise landscapingโ€”not rock-only yards. Utahโ€™s landscape incentive program requires converted areas to have at least 50% plant coverage at maturity, using water-efficient shrubs and perennials. The state also recommends keeping only the lawn a household actually uses and avoiding large areas of dark, heat-retaining rock.

Perhaps it isnโ€™t about choosing between grass and gravel. Itโ€™s about keeping useful grass, watering it wisely and replacing unused turf with drought-tolerant plants, trees and mulch.

๐Ÿ’ฌ What do you think? Have you replaced part of your lawnโ€”and did it make your yard better or hotter?
