Crossing Guard Fatally Struck Near Layton Elementary School

A crossing guard was fatally struck near a Layton elementary school while helping children cross the street. Emergency responders arrived quickly, but the individual did not survive. The driver remained on-site and is cooperating with investigators. The cause of the accident is still under investigation. The incident has left the community in mourning, with school officials providing support to those affected.

Train Horn Noise Still Disrupts Northern Utah Residents After Months of Complaints

Residents from Salt Lake City to Ogden have been dealing with months of persistent train horn noise, and many are still waiting for relief. The issue stems from changes in federal regulations and local policies affecting railroad crossings, resulting in increased horn use at all hours.

Many communities along the rail corridor had previously benefited from designated "quiet zones," where safety measures such as additional barriers allowed trains to pass without routinely sounding their horns. However, modifications to regulations and safety concerns have led to increased horn use, frustrating residents who say the noise disrupts sleep and daily life.

Local officials and transportation agencies acknowledge the complaints and are working on possible solutions, but the process is complex. Establishing or reestablishing quiet zones requires meeting strict federal safety requirements, and funding for necessary infrastructure improvements can be a challenge.

In the meantime, residents continue to push for action, hoping for a resolution that balances safety with the need for a quieter environment. Until then, the sound of train horns remains a daily—and nightly—reality for many along the Wasatch Front.
