🗣️Community Talks:

Wood Chips at Bountiful Dog Park Spark Community Debate
A Facebook post questioning the use of wood chips instead of grass at the new dog park in Bountiful sparked a lively local discussion this week. The original concern focused on ticks and splinters, but many residents pushed back.
City Council member and Mayor-elect, Kate Bradshaw explained that grass couldn’t withstand heavy dog traffic and urine, noting that bark is common at dog parks and playgrounds across the valley. Several dog owners agreed, saying grass would quickly be destroyed and that they’ve had no issues with ticks or splinters.
While opinions varied, many commenters appreciated the explanation and praised city leaders for engaging directly with the community.

Swap, Solve, Repeat: Free Puzzle Exchange at The Book Garden in Bountiful
Hey All! Looking for a cozy winter activity you can take part in? How ‘bout a free puzzle swap at The Book Garden on Main Street. From January 2 through January 10, the shop invites community members to bring in gently used puzzles and exchange them for new ones—all at no cost.
Participants are asked to bring completed puzzles in good condition, ensuring all pieces are accounted for. To keep things organized, puzzles should be placed in ziplock bags before dropping them off.
The Book Garden is open Monday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., offering plenty of time to stop by and find your next challenge.

Eagle Mountain Family Overwhelmed with Support as Son Fights for Life After Shooting
A 23-year-old man, Brandon Ortiz, remains in critical condition after being shot in the neck during a violent confrontation in Eagle Mountain on December 23. Three juveniles have been arrested in connection with the incident. Despite a long recovery ahead, Brandon’s family is finding hope in the support from the Utah community, which has rallied with donations, meals, and emotional support. Brandon, visiting from Texas for the holidays, has shown signs of resilience and is determined to heal, though he faces partial paralysis on his right side.

New Year, New Goals for Happier Pets ✨🐶
Late December is the perfect time to hit the reset button — for us and our pets. Busy schedules and holiday excitement can throw off routines, so winter becomes a great window to bring back structure and build new skills.
Here are a few simple goals that make a big difference:
• Better leash manners for easier winter walks
• Polite greetings for upcoming gatherings
• Recall + impulse control for safety and confidence
• Fun new tricks to keep minds active inside
• Daily enrichment to create a calm home rhythm
Why it matters:
Small, consistent wins = more confidence and fewer unwanted behaviors.
And by spring? You’ll be ready for your best adventures yet together. 🌱🐕
