Handcart Days Parade: A Grand Celebration of Community Spirit and Tradition!
BOUNTIFUL β From its humble beginnings in 1950 to becoming one of the largest parades in the state, Handcart Days has blossomed into a beloved tradition for Bountiful and its neighboring cities. What started with less than 2,500 spectators has grown to attract tens of thousands, all eager to see the spectacular floats, majestic horses, antique cars, and more.
Mark your calendars for this yearβs parade, kicking off at 9 a.m. on July 20, with the inspiring theme βOnward and Upward.β The route begins at 1500 South, stretches to 400 North, and concludes at 100 West.
Jill Frasier, our dedicated parade chair, shared the incredible scale of this event. βThere are 13 LDS stakes involved and more than 200 volunteers,β she said. βWe have the Jeep Posse and 65 ham radio operators working with us. The radio operators ensure smooth communication throughout the parade, helping us adjust the pace as needed.β
Jill emphasized the deep-rooted tradition of the event. βPeople call us as early as January to plan their family vacations around Handcart Days. Itβs a community event that truly brings people together.β
Handcart Days commemorates the arduous journey and resilience of the handcart pioneers who trekked to Utah. Though it started in Bountiful, it now embraces the entire South Davis community.
βWe want everyone in the community to feel included,β Jill added. βThe parade lasts about an hour and a half, and we have over 90 entries lined up.β
This yearβs Grand Marshal is Sandy Inman, a key figure behind the Bountiful History Museum. βShe has greatly contributed to our community,β Jill noted.
The parade promises delightful surprises, with over 50 horse entries and six bands, including the crowd-favorite Wasatch District Pipe Band. Jill excitedly mentioned, βHardware Ranch is bringing their Clydesdales, and the Utah National Guard will be there. The parade will end with the Major Brent Taylor Foundationβs big flag, proudly carried by youth councils from Woods Cross, West Bountiful, and Bountiful.β
Expect to see grand floats from KSL, Chick-Fil-A, and Young Automotive. Jill explained a new rule this year: βUnless theyβre a sponsor, they canβt have a banner. We want to raise the quality of the parade and avoid it feeling like an advertisement. The floats should show some effort.β
Jill also shared, βWeβve provided funds to the Val Verda stake and Kings Cross Church in Farmington to build floats. We aim to include the whole community.β
An exciting addition this year is a special section showcasing classic, muscle, and super cars, adding more excitement for car enthusiasts.
The parade entries are thoughtfully staged along the route for variety and enjoyment. βWe want to be accommodating. For example, if someone is blowing bubbles, we ensure theyβre not in the mayorβs face,β Jill laughed. βCross E is bringing goats and other animals, so we carefully plan their placement too.β
Our wonderful volunteers will ensure everything runs smoothly, even following the horses to clean up. βForty-eight families are assigned different sections to pick up garbage,β Jill shared.
Spectators, please remember, you can set up your chairs starting at 9 p.m. Friday night. Any early setups will be collected by the police and can be retrieved at the station.
The police and city departments provide incredible support, from setting up barricades to using drones for safety checks, and assisting with street cleanup.
There wonβt be an announcer this year, Jill mentioned. βAfter COVID, we found it costly and time-consuming.
For those eager to see the lineup, you can view the entry list online now at this link.
In addition to the parade, enjoy fun events at Bountiful City Park on Friday night and after the parade on Saturday. Fridayβs activities run from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m., featuring a Peter Breinholt concert from 8 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. Saturdayβs festivities start at 10 a.m. and continue until 3 p.m., with a fireworks show at 10 p.m. at Mueller Park Junior High.
Thank you Jill and the Handcart Days Parade Committee for your devoted countless hours to organizing this event. Itβs going to be an unforgettable event filled with community spirit and joy!
