Celebrating Labor Day: Honoring the Heroes of the American Workforce

Labor Day, celebrated on the first Monday of September, is more than just the unofficial end of summer—it's a day to honor the hard-fought achievements of the American labor movement. The holiday began in the late 19th century during the Industrial Revolution when workers pushed for better conditions. The first Labor Day celebration was held in 1882 in New York City, where 10,000 workers marched together. By 1894, after significant labor unrest, Labor Day became a national holiday, thanks to President Grover Cleveland. Today, it's a time to reflect on the contributions of workers to America's success, often enjoyed with parades, speeches, and community gatherings.

Road Closures on 500 West and Pages Lane: Plan Ahead

Heads up for two road closures coming up in our area:

- 500 West will be closed between 2600 South and Orchard Drive from Tuesday, September 3rd, through Friday, September 6th. The closure will be in effect from 7 a.m. to approximately 3 p.m. each day. For any questions, feel free to contact South Davis Water at 801-295-4468.

- Pages Lane will be closed on Monday and Tuesday, September 9th and 10th. The closure will stretch between the frontage road and the railroad tracks.

A local resident recently shared a reminder about road closures on social media, asking drivers to respect the barriers, especially on 500 West. Last week, some drivers chose to ignore the signs, only to end up frustrated when they realized they couldn't get through and turned onto smaller residential streets. The resident urges everyone to take a small detour via Orchard Drive—it’s just a few extra minutes but will help keep the neighborhood safe and calm, especially for kids who play nearby.

TONIGHT! Corbin Maxey Brings Live Animals to Station Park’s Family First Monday

After the show, there's an opportunity to meet Corbin and the animals at 7:00 PM near the stage. The event will also include guest characters, face painting, balloon twisters, games, prizes, and more activities at vendor booths. For more details, visit Station Park's event page.

Longtime Volunteers Ousted, Davis County Shooting Range Closed

The Davis County Shooting Range has been shut down due to a contract dispute with long-serving volunteers. The volunteers, who managed the range for years, were told by the county that their contract would not be renewed. This has led to the closure of the facility, disappointing many local gun enthusiasts and hunters. The county has yet to provide details on its future plans for the range or the reasons behind the non-renewal of the contract.

Medicare Beware: Steer Clear of Common Pitfalls

Navigating Medicare can be tricky, but avoiding common mistakes can save you from unexpected expenses and coverage gaps. Here’s how to stay on top of your Medicare game:

Key Points:

- Mind Your Enrollment Window: Missing your Medicare enrollment window can result in late penalties and delayed coverage. Make sure you enroll as soon as you’re eligible.

- Review Your Plan Annually: Medicare plans change every year, as do your health needs. Reviewing your plan annually during Open Enrollment ensures you have the best coverage at the best cost.

- Check Plan Networks: If you’re considering a Medicare Advantage plan, make sure your preferred doctors and hospitals are in-network. Out-of-network care can be much more expensive.

Stay Proactive:

Staying informed and proactive can help you avoid costly mistakes and ensure you have the coverage that best suits your needs. For expert guidance in navigating your Medicare options, contact John Miller today.

Skyward Symphony Shines Light with
Free Community Concerts

The Skyward Symphony, a community orchestra in Davis County, brings joy and light through free concerts. Directed by Jonathan Nish, a criminal defense lawyer, the orchestra offers a needed balance to the darker aspects of his profession. The ensemble, which began in 2018 with fewer than 40 musicians, has now grown to over 70. They recently performed a well-attended summer concert featuring music by John Williams. The symphony emphasizes inclusivity and encourages young musicians to join, fostering a love for orchestral music in the community.
